Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir hasn’t had the best of times of late and was eventually left out of the national team. The speedster forayed into international cricket as a bright prospect, but the spot-fixing scandal in 2010 turned his cricketing career upside down. He made a comeback in 2016 but hasn’t been able to wield his magic with the leather in hand.
The 26-year-old is currently playing for his department Sui Southern Gas Corporation in his country’s domestic cricket. Earlier in the 2017 Champions Trophy final in London, the Gujjar Khan-born bowler got the wicket of Indian captain Virat Kohli after he was dropped off him in the same over. Quite expectantly, he was relieved after the right-hander’s dismissal.
“When Virat Kohli came in, I had bowled an inswing delivery and he was beaten. Rohit Sharma was also dismissed off an inswinging delivery too. He was dropped earlier and I thought if he stuck around, he will take India towards victory.
So I prayed to god for his wicket and the next ball I got his wicket after Shadab Khan took a brilliant catch”, Amir was quoted as saying in a show named Voice of Cricket, hosted by renowned Pakistani journalist Zainab Abbas.
Sachin’s wicket was special for me
Amir is one of the very few bowlers, who have the distinction of dismissing both Kohli and the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. When asked to choose among the two wickets, the pacer said: “Both. They’re both big batsmen. Tendulkar I will say because when I was playing then, I was new to the team. So Sachin’s wicket was special for me.”
After a lacklustre outing in the Asia Cup, where he finished without a single wicket and failed to bowl as per expectations, he was sidelined. The World Cup is scheduled to be played from May 30 next year in England and Wales, and Amir would be desperate to stake his claim back into the team at the earliest.
