Mohammad Amir's entry in the Pakistan World Cup squad still possible as per the captain and coach

Pakistan last week announced their squad for ICC World Cup 2019 in which they did not pick veteran pacer, Mohammad Amir. The 27-year-old left-arm seamer, who had rocked arch-rivals India in the final of the Champions Trophy in 2017, has had a poor run of late with the ball. The pacer could pick only five wickets in his last 14 games and went wicketless for nine consecutive matches. Even skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed sounded pessimistic about the strike bowler ahead of the selection of the squad.

However, though Amir’s supporters found it disappointing that the player could make it to the WC. He has been included in the 17-man squad that will play in the limited-overs series against England ahead of the WC in May. If the left-arm pacer can hit back form in that series, he still has a chance of making it to the squad since the ICC rules give May 23 as the deadline to make changes in the teams’ respective squads without any approval.

Amir has been working hard

“Amir has an opportunity in the England series [to make the final cut]. He has been working hard here and has shown that in his bowling in the training camp. In the practice match yesterday, he looked good while bowling. We will try to provide him an opportunity in England so he can perform,” Sarfaraz was quoted as saying at the Pakistan Cricket Board headquarters in Lahore.

“He is running well and his attitude has been outstanding. He’s been brilliant in the last couple of weeks and he will have opportunities in England to show us he still deserves a spot in the World Cup squad,” said coach Mickey Arthur.

Amir, who has 234 international wickets under his belt, averaged over 92 since playing that Champions Trophy final has been a major disappointment for the Pakistan team management. But the former champions have not yet given up their quest to play Amir in the showpiece tournament.

Pakistan will play England in five ODIs and one T20I before kicking off their WC campaign against the Windies at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
