It seems Team India skipper MS Dhoni will have the pay a heavy cost for Transport Department goof-up. It is reported that Mahi will pay Rs 1.5 lakhs as 15-year registration fees for his imported Hummer H2 vehicle valued at Rs.43 lakh, the Ranchi transport department said on Wednesday.

Such fault also attracts fine but the officials have not announced how much fine the cricketer will have to pay for his Hummer. The issue crept up due to a typing error where the typist ‘mistakenly’ registered his Hummer as a Scorpio in 2009 at his home town Ranchi. As a result of the typing error, Dhoni was asked to deposit only Rs 53,000 as registration charges instead of Rs four lakh.

“The current value of the car is about Rs.43 lakh. The payment of Rs.1, 59,804 would give lifetime registration to Dhoni’s vehicle. The exact dues could not be calculated due to a link failure,” said Ranchi district transport officer Nagendar Paswan.

On March 21, Dhoni’s representative handed over the invoice, registration card, insurance papers and owner manual of the vehicle to the district transport office. However, the customs papers of the vehicle were missing, which delayed the process, said Paswan.

The transport department received the customs papers on Wednesday and proceeded with the calculations.

The invoice from 2008 quotes the price of the vehicle number (JH01AB 7781) as 39,000 pounds, which would be converted to rupees as per the current currency value, the official who collected the document said.

“During online updating in 2012, the Hummer changed to a Scorpio, which was a typing error. We will rectify it,” Paswan said.

Before changes were made to the motor vehicle act in 2011, road tax had to be paid every year. Now, it is a one-time payment.
