MS Dhoni can continue after the World Cup: Sourav Ganguly

After a pretty indifferent 2018, Indian wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni has got his mojo back in the ongoing year with some significant scores under his belt. He was the Player of the Tournament in the three-match away ODI series against Australia, where he was India’s leading run-scorer with three consecutive half-centuries, all of which came during run-chases.

He also scored a superlative half-century in the opening ODI against the Aussies in Hyderabad, where he notched a 141-run stand with Kedar Jadhav to help India win the match by six wickets. In the meantime, speculations surrounding the 37-year-old’s retirement from the highest level after playing the upcoming World Cup, starting Thursday, May 30, has been doing the rounds.

However, Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian cricketer, reckons age is irrelevant and the Jharkhand-born can continue if he shows consistency. “Dhoni can continue after the World Cup. If India wins the Cup and Dhoni performs consistently then why should he retire? Age is never a factor if talent is there,” the experienced Ganguly was quoted as saying in Hindustan Times.

Shikhar and Rohit should open

Ganguly also talked about Shikhar Dhawan, who hasn’t had the greatest run of late at the highest level. The Prince of Kolkata feels that the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Dhawan shouldn’t be tinkered by any stretch of the imagination. Nevertheless, he didn’t count KL Rahul out of the equation.

“The opening combination should not be tweaked. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are the ideal pair to give India a fast start. But KL Rahul is also there. Shikhar and Rohit should open. Other than the two, Rahul is another batsman who can open,” he added.

Rahul played the T20I series and churned out a couple of fifties, but didn’t get to play the first two ODIs in Hyderabad and Nagpur respectively. Dhawan got out for a golden duck in the first game and fell prey to part-time off-spinner Glenn Maxwell in the second game after doing all the hard work.
