MS Dhoni's captaincy career in numbers

The 9-year-long career as Indian captain has come to an end as MS Dhoni decided to step down and will now play as a wicketkeeper-batsman in the limited overs format hereafter. His record as captain was the best any Indian and including achieved a rare feat of bagging all the ICC titles as captain. Here we look at Dhoni’s major achievements as India’s limited-overs captain

0 – Number of keepers captained in at least 50 games in any format in Internationals. MS Dhoni captained India in more than 50 games in each of the 3 formats.

1 – MS Dhoni is the only captain to have all the 3 ICC limited over format tournaments; World Cup, Champions Trophy and World T20.

2 – Number of ODI finals MS Dhoni sealed with a six; World Cup 2011 and tri-series in 2013, both against Sri Lanka. Only two other instances of captain finishing of ODI tournament finals with six have been recorded, one by Jayasuriya in 1999 and Tharanga in the recent Zimbabwe tri-series.

4 – Number of tournaments with 6 and more teams MS Dhoni has led his team in international cricket, the joint most by any skipper. Dhoni led India in WT20 2007, CWC 2011, CT 2013 and Asia Cup T20 2016 to victory. Ricky Ponting did the same number of times for Australia as he led them in CWC 2003 and 2007, CT 2006 and 2009. Imran Khan also led Pakistan in 4 such tournaments: Austral-Asia Cup in 1986 and 1990, Nehru Cup in 1989 and World Cup in 1992.

5 – Number of players who have scored a run, picked up a wicket, took a catch and effected a stumping in international cricket as captain including MS Dhoni. The other 4 are John Reid, Tatenda Taibu, Brendon McCullum and AB de Villiers.

1.750 – Win-loss ratio of MS Dhoni as captain in ODI finals, the best for any Indian captain and 5th best in overall. (Min: 10 finals) India won 7 finals out of the 11 they played under Dhoni in ODIs.

41 – Number of T20I games MS Dhoni has won as captain which is the most. The 72 games he led India in T20Is is also the most by any captain.

53.92 – MS Dhoni’s batting average in ODIs as captain, the 2nd best for any player. AB de Villiers averages 65.92 as captain in ODIs. (Min: 1000 runs)

110 – Number of ODI matches MS Dhoni won as captain the most by an Indian and the 2nd most in overall. Mohammad Azharuddin had 90 ODI wins for India as captain. Overall, Ricky Ponting led in 165 ODI wins.

126 – Number of sixes hit by Dhoni in ODIs as captain, the most by any captain. He went past Ricky Ponting’s tally of 123 in recent New Zealand series.

211 – Number of sixes hit by MS Dhoni in international cricket as captain, the most by anyone.

199 – Number of ODIs MS Dhoni has captained Team India. The most by any Indian and 3rd most overall. Ricky Ponting led in 230 ODIs while Stephen Fleming acted as captained in 218 ODIs.

331 – Number of international matches in which MS Dhoni captained, the most by any player. Ricky Ponting acted as captain in 324 international matches.

6633 – Runs scored by Dhoni in ODIs as captain, the 2nd most by any player. Ricky Ponting has the most as he scored 8497 runs.

1112 – Runs scored by him as captain in T20Is, the most by any player. Faf du Plessis (1003) is the only other player to score more than 1000 T20I runs as captain.

11199 – Runs scored by MS Dhoni in international cricket as captain, the most by any Indian and the 4th most in overall. He is one of the 5 players to score 10000 runs in internationals as skipper.
