MS Dhoni cried after winning the 2011 World Cup final
When Harbhajan hugged, MS couldn't control himself.
India became the first team in 2011 to win the coveted World Cup on home soil when they defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets on a historic day. There were plenty of emotions on the field after the Indian skipper MS Dhoni launched a huge six which was ultimately a winning shot. Right from Sachin Tendulkar to Yuvraj Singh, from Gautam Gambhir to Harbhajan Singh everyone’s eyes were filled with the tears of happiness as the Men in Blue scripted a famous victory. However, no camera captured the tears in the eyes of Dhoni who actually cried after hitting the winning runs.
India were chasing a mammoth total of 276 in the mega finale of the event and had lost the crucial wickets of Virender Sehwag and Sachin. But Gambhir and Virat Kohli steadied the ship of the innings and brought the team back into the game. Then the captain fantastic joined in with the left-hander and took India close to victory. Gambhir missed out on a well-deserved ton but brought India in sight of the victory and the skipper played a majestic knock of 91* when it mattered the most.

The book ‘Democracy XI’ penned down by the renowned journalist Rajdeep Sardesai has revealed this secret in which Dhoni has himself admitted to the fact. The incident happened when everyone started hugging him after the gigantic six he hit over the long off and Ravi Shastri in the commentary box erupted. The captain cool couldn’t control his emotions when Harbhajan Singh hugged him with the tears of happiness.
“Yes, I cried, but the cameras didn’t catch it. I was naturally excited but held back the emotions till a tearful Harbhajan hugged me. That’s when I got teary-eyed but kept my head down so no one would see me crying,” Dhoni said as quoted in the book by Rajdeep Sardesai. The moment though was a memorable one in the history of Indian cricket as the winning shot is still fresh in the memories of the fans.
