Former India skipper MS Dhoni is ready for a new role in his cricket career. The hard-hitting veteran batsman has agreed to join the Residential Cricket Academy in Bengal as a mentor. Former Bengal cricketer Subhomoy Das had requested Dhoni to join the academy as a mentor and MS Dhoni obliged. Apparently, both Das and Dhoni are very old friends and have known each other for a long time.

Das will be one of the main directors of the cricket academy. The academy will start in Barasat area in North 24 Parganas in West Bengal. The expected date for the academy to get underway is expected to be in late March or early April this year. Subhomoy Das was a very happy man at the prospect of his brainchild getting underway.

He remarked that it was MS Dhoni, who had encouraged him to embark on this journey of starting a residential academy. The academy will have regular academics in addition to high class infrastructure for sports. “It was Dhoni’s wish that I initiate for a residential cricket school in Bengal. Dhoni used to tell me that the project should be made in a way where the students can have school and make studies along with learning cricket. So, we have designed the project in a manner where we will have a school along with modern and scientific infrastructure,” quoted Subhomoy Das.

Interestingly, the initial plan was to start the academy in Ranchi. However, they failed to procure the desired area of land (200 acres) and hence had to finalise it in Bengal. Das further cited that this will be the first time that Dhoni will actively work as a batting coach and mentor in a cricket academy.

“It will be the first time Dhoni will actively work as batting coach and mentor in the academy. At the same time, he will also assist our wicket-keeping coach in the subject. So, before starting his job Mahi has also taken required suggestions from Rahul and Sachin also,” he conceded.
