MS Dhoni moves Supreme Court against real estate group over unpaid dues worth Rs 40 crore

Former India captain MS Dhoni on Tuesday approached the Supreme Court seeking its direction to Amrapali real-estate group for paying his pending dues allegedly amounting to a whopping Rs 40 crore towards his service to the same. Last month, the apex court had given the Delhi Police a nod to arrest Amrapali Group CMD Anil Sharma and two other directors in connection to a criminal complaint filed against them.

The top court has also sought attachment of Sharma’s personal property, including a bungalow in South Delhi. It made clear that the property of the other two directors would also be attached. The SC had asked the forensic auditors to complete their probe on transfer and/or divergence of homebuyers’ money by Amrapali Group.

“The embattled real estate group owes Rs 40 crore to the former cricket captain over his services to the group while acting as a brand ambassador,” First Cricket cited reports as quoting Dhoni’s lawyer M L Lahoti.

On January 25, the apex court had also given a go-ahead to the government-owned National Buildings Construction Corporation to begin the process of completing two Amrapali housing projects that have remained stalled. The matter was then heard by a division bench comprising Justice Arun Mishra and Justice UU Lalit.

Dhoni’s association with Amrapali Group started in 2009

Dhoni had entered into many agreements with Amrapali Group in 2009 to promote the group as its brand ambassador and also gave exclusive rights to the builder to use his endorsement in matters related to marketing and public relations. His association with the group continued till 2016 after a social media campaign was launched against the cricketer for promoting an allegedly fraudulent company. The cricketer’s wife Sakshi was also associated with the Amrapali Group’s charity activities.

The SC is already hearing petitions filed by over 46,000 homebuyers against the real-estate group for duping them into paying for flats but not handing them over.

Dhoni is currently leading Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 and saw them win both the games they have played so far. They crushed Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the first game of this season by 7 wickets in Chennai and then defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by 6 wickets in their den on Tuesday. The defending champions are comfortably leading the points table at the moment.
