The ongoing edition of the Mzansi Super League (MSL) is nearing the business end of the competition. No wonder why the last few encounters of the league stages are turning out to be high adrenaline games. The players are giving their all for their sides. While their efforts with the bat and the ball is expected, Daniel Christian managed to take things to a whole new level in another department – appealing for a decision!
Christian, who is plying his trade for the Jozi Stars in the competition, urged the umpire to give a decision in his favour with his incessant and aggressive appeal. It might sound ridiculous from the outset, but certainly, the umpire must have felt some aggression oozing from the veteran Australian all-rounder.
The action perspired in the match 26 of the season when the Jozi Stars took on the Paarl Rocks. During the run chase of 171, Paarl Rocks looked steady in control of the game with their skipper Faf du Plessis anchoring the chase. In the 16th over, Daniel Christian turned up to bowl to du Plessis, who was batting on 61. On the third delivery of the over, the Paarl Rocks skipper decided to sway away from the line of the ball and scoop one over the fine leg fielder.
Much against his expectations, he failed to pick up the length ball by Christian and was rapped on the pads. Christian erupted in his appeal and the on-field umpire looked unfazed for a brief while. The batters started to run in the meantime, but Christian continued to appeal. His incessant appeals eventually yielded good fruits as the umpire raised his finger soon.
Faf du Plessis was adjudged lbw and he had to take the long walk back. Christian’s effort, however, could not stall the moving run chase. Grant Thomson continued to bat from the other end and remained unbeaten on 71 off 55 deliveries to see Paarl Rocks home with 6 wickets in hand. For Christian, the wicket remained to be the only one he scalped on the day as he finished with 1/23 in his two overs.
