Finally, the Pakistan Cricket Board has had enough of Sarfaraz Ahmed and have decided to get rid of him as captain of the team in Test cricket and T20I cricket. Azhar Ali will lead the team in Test cricket, while Babar Azam will captain in the T20I format. Pakistan is scheduled to play three T20 Internationals and two Tests against Australia during their month-long tour Down Under.

Sarfaraz was racing against time in order to save his job as captain ever since the high of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 win wore off ultimately. The final nail in the coffin proved to be his failure to lead Pakistan into the knockout stages of the ICC World Cup 2019. Though the new selector and head coach Misbah-ul-Haq kept faith in him for home series against Sri Lanka, the 0-3 loss in the T20I series to a second-string team ended whatever trust was left.

The captain’s poor form with the bat didn’t help him either as now the PCB chief Ehsan Mani had advised him to go back into the domestic cricket and find his form and regain his confidence. The ODI captaincy will be discussed later as the team is not playing any 50-over games in the near future.

“It has been a difficult decision to drop Sarfaraz Ahmed, who has performed well as a player and a leader. But, his loss in form and confidence is visible and, in the best interest of the team, it has been decided to leave him out and provide him the opportunity to reflect and regroup himself and try to reclaim his form away from international cricket,” Mani was quoted as saying in the PCB press release.

This has made the Pakistani public quite happy as Sarfaraz was getting quite unpopular ever since he made the grave mistake of winning the toss and choosing to bowl first against India in the World Cup game, which the Men in Green lost and time was ticking down for him. He won’t be traveling with the Pakistani team to Australia for the month-long tour and Twitter was filled with reactions to him being dropped from the helm.
