Mumbai Indians need to get Ishan Kishan playing, says Rohan Gavaskar
With Rohit opening, there is no spot left for Ishan Kishan in the team.
Of all players who should’ve featured in their respective franchise’s playing XI but haven’t, Ishan Kishan’s case is the most questionable one. The 20-year-old cricketer from Jharkhand is lauded by many as among the few wicket-keeper batsmen in the country who are equipped enough to replace the legendary MS Dhoni when he decides to hang his boots.
Kishan, who had a good IPL season in 2017 playing for the Gujarat Lions, was eventually recruited by the Mumbai Indians franchise in the following edition. MI are well known for their support to the players from the domestic circuit, helping their cause in showcasing young or lesser known talent. However, with the non-inclusion of Ishan Kishan in the playing XI in the first week of IPL 2019 has raised eyebrows.
His recent success in the domestic scene suggested that the 12th edition of the IPL could be a standout season in his career and a well-paved way towards his international career with the Indian team. Moreover, he is also pretty decent behind the stumps and was seen as a future star for the Mumbai Indians last season. However, the Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma decided to open the innings this year himself with Quinton de Kock and eventually there was no spot left for Kishan in the playing XI.
Bring in Ishan Kishan and Ben Cutting
The Jharkhand cricketer has also been omitted for the No 4 position which is secured for the 37-year-old veteran batsman Yuvraj Singh. Ishan is someone who consolidates and accelerates in the middle overs. He is equipped enough to reduce the pressure of scoring more runs from the final five overs. These all reasons combined have made the experts voice their opinion about Kishan being incorporated in the playing XI. Former Indian middle-order batsman, Rohan Gavaskar also feels the same.
The 43-year-old has pressed that the Mumbai Indians should get Ishan Kishan in “somehow.” “Mumbai need to make a few changes in the side. They have to get Ishan Kishan. He is a wonderful young talent, a wonderful player,” Rohan said while speaking to Cricket Next.
As the 7th placed Mumbai Indians face the undefeated Chennai Super Kings tonight at the Wankhede, Rohan Gavaskar also added that the home team should get the Australian all-rounder Ben Cutting in instead of Kieron Pollard.
