Mumbai domestic side are set to play their historic 500th game in India’s premier first-class tournament, the Ranji Trophy, thus becoming the first team to achieve the milestone.
Mumbai, the most successful team by a mile in Ranji Trophy history will face Baroda during the 5th Round game of the 2017/18. With 41 Ranji titles, Mumbai stands only behind New South Wales (46) in winning the domestic FC titles. Mumbai, which was called as Bombay, changed to Mumbai from 1996/97 season after the city was renamed in 1996.
Here we look at all the records and achievements by and for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy so far.
8 – Number of consecutive outright wins for Mumbai in the 1961/62 and 1962/63 seasons. These are the most consecutive wins for any team in Ranji Trophy. Mumbai also won seven in a row on two different occasions.
15 – Number of consecutive Ranji Trophy title wins for Mumbai between 1958/59 and 1972/73. No other team has even won ten titles so far. They won 18 out of 19 titles between 1958/59 and 1976/77 as they failed to make it to the final of 1973/74 season.
38 – Mumbai’s 38 wins against Gujarat are the most for them and the joint-most for any side against a single opponent in Ranji Trophy so far. Karnataka also registered 38 outright wins against Kerala in the Ranji Trophy.
41 – Number of titles for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy so far. Karnataka comes next with 8 titles. Mumbai featuring in 46 finals is also a record as Karnataka and Delhi have played 14 finals each.
63 – Mumbai’s 500th game will be their 63rd Ranji game against Baroda; the most Mumbai or any team have faced an opposition in Ranji Trophy. Mumbai played Maharashtra and Gujarat on 62 occasions each in Ranji. Mumbai lost outright to Baroda on four occasions which are also the most for them against any opponent.
120 – Number of Ranji Trophy appearances Wasim Jaffer made in his career for Mumbai. Amol Muzumdar (102) is the only other player with 100 Ranji appearances for Mumbai.
242 – Mumbai’s 242 Ranji Trophy wins are easily the most for any team as no other side in Ranji history have won more than 200 games so far. Karnataka stands behind Mumbai with 192 outright wins in the Ranji history.
361 – Padmakar Shivalkar is the leading wicket-taker for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy. He bagged 361 wickets in 74 matches in the tournament. Shivalkar’s 27 five-fers and 11 ten-wicket match hauls are also the most for any Mumbai player in Ranji Trophy. Ramesh Powar (303) is the only other player to take 300 Ranji wickets for Mumbai.
499 – While Mumbai becomes the first team to feature in 500 Ranji Trophy matches during the 5th round, Delhi will be seen playing their 438th game which are the 2nd most number of Ranji appearances for a team.

9759 – Runs Wasim Jaffer scored in the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai. No other player has scored as many runs in the Ranji Trophy history so far. Jaffer’s 35 centuries and 39 fifties are also the most for any Mumbai player in Ranji trophy. Amol Muzumdar’s Ranji tally of 7091 runs for Mumbai is the 2nd highest.
