Nasser Hussain tipped England to leave out Ollie Pope for Ben Stokes
Who will England drop for Stokes?
While India are pondering over dropping the players for their lacklustre performance ahead of the third Test, their opponents are having a happy headache. Ben Stokes has been cleared of all the charges and he has walked back into the playing XI. The management, however, has decided to drop Sam Curran who has performed exceptionally well. However, Nasser Hussain had given his opinion on the matter and wanted England to drop Ollie Pope who made his debut at Lord’s.
He fared decently in his debut knock and scored 28 runs off 60 balls before being pinned in front of the stumps by Hardik Pandya. The youngster definitely deserved another chance but leaving out Curran would’ve also been a tough decision for them.
It should hurt Stokes the most
Nasser Hussain, in his column for Daily Mail, felt that Ben Stokes returning into the playing XI will temporarily end another player’s Test career. He hoped that the all-rounder realises the harsh truth and had pinpointed Pope to be left out of the Trent Bridge Test.
“I’m afraid to say, Ollie Pope. It’s not fair on him, because he did well on debut at Lord’s. But these are exceptional circumstances, and Pope’s chance will come again soon. It is not often you need six bowlers, especially in England, but because both Woakes and Curran have to stay put, and you need a spinner in Adil Rashid,” he had written.
Former England captain had also justified the reason why the likes of Chris Woakes and Sam Curran couldn’t be dropped. While the former played a brilliant knock with the bat at Lord’s and also picked 4 wickets with the ball, the 20-year-old Curran turned the game on its head at Edgbaston. Hussain will be surely gutted to see that the left-hander has been dropped and one must feel for him.
