It was quite a spectacle at the New Zealand Cricket Awards which took place on Thursday. All the cricketers – men and women, looked dapper and stylish in their formal attire. It was New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, though, who grabbed all the attention on the night.

Williamson is one of the finest cricketers ever produced by the country. The right-hander is temperamentally sound and technically exemplary. He had a great run in the last year. Thus, he ended up clean sweeping most of the awards. The 28-year-old also won the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal for the third time and became the first to receive this award thrice.

Kane Williamson overtakes Ross Taylor

By winning the prestigious medal for the third time, Williamson managed to go past Ross Taylor who won the medal twice. This award was introduced in 2010-11. It is given to the player who performs the best across all the three formats throughout the year. New Zealand pacer Trent Boult and former skipper Brendon McCullum won this award once each in the past.

In the 2018-19 season, Kane Williamson led New Zealand to five consecutive Test series wins. West Indies, Sri Lanka, England, Pakistan and Bangladesh were all defeated in this period. Furthermore, he also became the first Kiwi batsman to hit 20 Test centuries. He scored 925 runs in 9 Tests, 838 runs in 21 ODIs and 332 runs from 15 T20Is from the start of 2018. The skipper was also awarded the International Test player of the year.

Moreover, he also received The Redpath Cup for first-class batting while Trent Boult won it for bowling. 18-year-old woman cricketer Amelia Kerr was another impressive performer at the awards show. She won the women’s ODI Player of the Year award and the Phyl Blackler Cup for women’s domestic bowling. Ross Taylor bagged the ODI Player of the Year award while Colin Munro won the T20I Player of the Year award.
