Victorian Bushrangers batsman Nic Maddinson sustained a broken arm while batting in a Sheffield Shield match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Maddinson is reported to miss out on the initial part of the Big Bash League with his new team Melbourne Stars after being sidelined for four to six weeks.

After hitting 162 in the first innings of the match against Western Australia, the 26-year old had started the 2nd innings on a positive note, scoring 10 off 20 deliveries. Soon after, he was struck by a short ball off right-arm fast bowler Jhye Richardson on his right forearm. The physio and the doctor were immediately out in the ground after which Maddinson was taken to a nearby hospital for scans.

The New South Wales-born was also reported to not having worn an arm-guard. An early Tea break was announced after the incident with the hosts having positioned on 13-0. Victoria finished day three with 112-0, ahead by 240 runs after bowling out Western Australia for 296.

Victoria spin bowler Jon Holland was also disappointed to see Maddinson go down like that and conceded that the youngster is pretty hard working and an asset to the team.

Maddinson keen to earn a recall to the national team

Speaking about Maddinson, Holland said as quoted by cricket.com.au: “To see him go down when he’s batting so well is disappointing. He’s fitted in the group really well, he works hard, he’s a good bloke. We didn’t know until the Doc got out there and started pressing his thumb into his arm – it looked pretty painful. He’s batting as well as we’ve ever seen him bat.”

Maddinson played his last Test against Pakistan in 2016, however, has had a forgettable career so far. The left-hander got his opportunity to debut for Victoria after Peter Handscomb, Aaron Finch, and Marcus Harris were all called to the Test side to face India. The 26-year old implied his desire to get a recall after having played a mammoth knock of 162.

“The biggest thing is I’ve had to come somewhere new and put runs on the board to earn selection. The thing in Australian cricket at the moment, everyone wants hundreds so that’s my focus,” Maddinson mentioned.
