Bangladesh ramped through records on Saturday by defeating the home team Sri Lanka in the game that witnessed a total of 429 runs scored. Kushal Perera and Kusal Mendis’s fifties at the top helped Sri Lanka to finish with 214/6 on the board. Bangladesh openers Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das collectively made 90 in mere 48 deliveries as Bangladesh cruised in the chase. Mushfiqur Rahim ensured their openers’ efforts didn’t go in a vain with an unbeaten 72-run knock off 35 balls. The keeper-batsman batted till the end to hand his team a famous win and open up the Nidahas Trophy.

5 – Bangladesh’s innings is only the 9th instance of a team’s top five scoring 20+ in a T20I inning. This is also the 2nd instance of five Bangladesh batsmen scoring 20 and more runs in a T20I. Their previous such instance was in the Khulna 2016 T20I against Zimbabwe.


9 – Runs Bangladesh successfully chased in the final over. These are the most they chased down to win an ODI/T20I. They chased down seven runs in the 50th over in the 2005 Cardiff ODI against Australia.

The previous most Bangladesh chased in the final over of a T20I was six runs in the 2011 T20I against West Indies in which Rahim hit a six when they needed four from the last two balls.


12 – Number of sixes Bangladesh hit in this game which are the most by them in a T20I inning. Bangladesh never hit more than eight sixes in a T20I before this game.


The 22 sixes in this game are the joint most in a T20I hosted by Sri Lanka. The T20I between Sri Lanka and West Indies in 2015 also had 22 sixes in the game.


50 – Sri Lanka became the first team to be defeated in 50 T20I matches. Interestingly, Bangladesh also had 49 losses in the T20I format before this game.


50 – Thisara Perera completed 50 wickets in T20I cricket with the wicket of Tamim Iqbal. He needed 70 games for completing the milestone which the most for any player.


215 – The 215-run chase by Bangladesh is the 4th highest successful run-chase in the T20I cricket. This is also the highest for Bangladesh and the highest against Sri Lanka in the format. Bangladesh’s run-chase is also the highest in a Twenty20 game in Sri Lanka.


215/5 – Bangladesh registered their maiden 200+ total in the T20I format. Their previous highest was 193/5 in the Dhaka T20I also against Sri Lanka in the last month.


215/5 – Bangladesh’s total of 215/5 is the highest T20I total for any team at the Colombo (RPS). West Indies’ 205/4 against Australia in the 2012 WT20 semis was the highest total at the venue before Sri Lanka’s 214/6 in the first innings.

The total of 214/6 is also Sri Lanka’s 2nd biggest team total at home in the T20I format behind the 215/3 against West Indies in the 2015 Pallekele T20I.


429 – The match aggregate of 429 runs is the 2nd highest in a T20I game in Sri Lanka. The 2016 T20I between Sri Lanka and Australia witnessed 441 runs scored in the 40 overs.
