No Day-Night Test for India against Windies and Australia

The concept of Day-Night Test cricket came into existence in 2015 when Australia and New Zealand locked horns at Adelaide. Ever since, every team has participated, barring India and Bangladesh and India, have plied their trade with the pink ball under the lights. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have been skeptical surrounding the feasibility of the format.

Recently, as per reports in the Times of India, the board has refused to play their Day-Night Tests against the Windies and Australia later this year. As per the board, playing the games would neutralize the effects of their strengths- the spinners and would surrender the advantage to the opposition. The ICC Test Championship, starting following the 2019 World would also not include the format.

The clarification against Day-Night Test

Recently, as per a source, gave the justification for India’s back-out. “If the ICC board has completely disregarded it, why should the onus be on the BCCI to participate in the concept? The BCCI doesn’t see any point in pursuing with the idea of a day-night Test at all,” the source mentioned. India was scheduled to play their inaugural Tests under the lights in Rajkot.

However, following India’s refusal to play the games, the official also ruled out any sort of preparations. “The idea was to set a precedent but now there’s no need for it. There’s no need for any practice either because India is neither going to play the Adelaide Test under lights nor any (such matches) in the future,” the source added.

Previously, Kapil Dev, the former Indian all-rounder, has mentioned that India should resort to the pink-ball in the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in order to groom themselves before taking on the world. Meanwhile, with the games canceled, it will be interesting to find out how India takes the format in their stride going forward.
