'No one has spoken about him' - Aakash Chopra feels Washington Sundar will bag big contract in IPL 2022 mega auction
Washington Sundar has been playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore since 2018.
Over the last few years, Washington Sundar has been one of India’s best bowling all-rounders. As a matter of fact, he was an integral part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore. In his IPL career so far, the off-spinner has picked 27 wickets in 41 innings, and has a miserly economy rate of 6.94.
He had a superb start to his career in the longest format as well. Right from his Test debut during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 to the Test series against England at home, he has done a commendable job so far. The former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra recently spoke about him too.
In a recent video shared on his YouTube channel, he expressed his surprise over the Tamil Nadu all-rounder’s name not coming up for consideration for India’s Test team for the South Africa tour. He went on to appreciate his skills as well. The cricketer-turned-commentator drew light on his skills in the longest format of the game, as well the shortest.
Washington Sundar should have been considered for South Africa tour: Aakash Chopra
“It’s an interesting name I am going to talk about – Washington Sundar. He has not come up for discussion, no one has spoken about him. Selectors have also picked Jayant Yadav, Rahul Chahar is injured but no one has talked about Washington Sundar.” Aakash Chopra said.
He even spoke about Sundar’s contribution to India’s historic win at the Gabba. “India won at the Gabba ground because Rishabh Pant had played, but also because Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar had scored a lot of runs in the first innings and Washington Sundar had taken wickets as well,” he added.
“After that, he played the Test matches against England in India and there also he scored runs and then you are going to South Africa, conditions where you might need a restrictive bowler and a little more depth in batting, could he not have been in the team if both Axar and Jadeja are injured. His name did not come at all and I am surprised.” said the former opener. He then spoke about how the 22-year-old could be a hot pick during the IPL 2022 mega auction.
“He used to be with RCB but the team has not retained him. He has taken 12 wickets at an economy of 4.40. The team has done well, he has done extremely well. Washington Sundar will be sold at a huge price, that’s what I believe because he is already a four-over bank in T20 cricket.” he said.
Last but not the least, the 44-year-old spoke about how he might compete with Ravichandran Ashwin for a spot in India’s squad for the ODI series against the Proteas.
“When India’s ODI team is selected, will Ravichandran Ashwin come there as well? That’s another big question because he has made a good comeback in white-ball cricket. So could he be a part of that team or will you start looking towards Washington Sundar?” he concluded.
