Not illogical to resign as Bangladesh coach: Chandika Hathurusingha
His first assignment as Sri Lanka coach is the tri-series in Bangladesh.
Former Bangladesh head coach, Chandika Hathurusingha who left Bangladesh coach post mid-contract faced the local media for the first time after his resignation. Following a disastrous tour of South Africa, he stepped down as Bangladesh’s head coach last year. The Tigers couldn’t win a single game out of the seven matches across different formats.
At the same time, he was appointed the head coach of his home country Sri Lanka, the team which is also struggling ever since the retirement of their stalwarts. Hathurusingha will replace Nic Pothas who will work as the assistant coach with him now.
I do not think it was illogical
Former Bangladesh and current Sri Lankan Coach, Chandika Hathurasingha cleared that it wasn’t illogical for him to resign after the disastrous South African tour. “I do not think it was illogical for me to leave Bangladesh job otherwise I would not have left. Unfortunately, I am not going to go into details about my professional commitment or my dealings with BCB. So I can’t answer that,” he said in a press conference at Dhaka.
Bangladesh did exceptionally well during his tenure. The triumphs at home against England and Australia in Test matches, qualifying to the semifinals of the Champions Trophy and furthermore, the ODI arrangement triumphs against India, Pakistan, and South Africa all went under his guidance. Bangladesh also reached the quarter-finals of 2015 World Cup for the first time ever.
“I have been in Bangladesh for three and a half years and probably everyone knows that I am not an emotional person. So there is not much emotion attached (that I have left Bangladesh). I still want Bangladesh to do well and wish the players well because I worked closely with them. Got to know them very well. So I want them to have lots of success in their life and same with the Bangladesh team. But at the same time, this is my job now, I want Sri Lanka to do well,’ the Sri Lankan head coach added.
