'One of the greatest Test hundreds' - Twitter goes wild as Rishabh Pant notches up stunning ton in Cape Town
Pant became the first overseas wicketkeeper to notch up Test centuries in Australia, England, and South Africa.
The man of big occasions, Rishabh Pant brings up his fourth Test hundred! It was indeed a high-class knock from the southpaw as the Cape Town track was constantly favouring the pacers. Moreover, stakes are incredibly high in the ongoing third Test between India and South Africa. With the series being poised at 1-1, the winner of this clash will walk away with a series triumph.
Not to forget, Pant was under the pump ahead of this clash as his recent performances weren’t up to the mark. In fact, he faced a lot of backlash for bagging a three-ball duck in the preceding game. However, Pant silenced his critics once again with a sensational batting display at the Newlands. Notably, he also became the first overseas wicketkeeper to notch up Test centuries in Australia, England, and South Africa.
Rishabh Pant shines in Cape Town a year after Gabba heroics
Meanwhile, Pant has made a habit of playing stellar knocks in deciding Tests. Exactly one year ago, Pant showcased a similar batting exhibition, helping India breach the Gabba fortress. Just like the ongoing clash, it was a series decider in Brisbane and Pant played a stellar 89-run knock to take his side to a historic win.
Pant’s recent form wasn’t spectacular as he hadn’t done much in the series before this game. In fact, a section of fans and experts wanted him in the benches after he got out playing a rash shot in the previous game. However, the 24-year-old came up with a stunning knock on a track where most of the batters struggled.
In fact, Pant, who scored 27 in India’s first innings, came out to bat at a critical situation this time around. India were tottering at 58/4, leading by 71 runs, after losing Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in the first 15 minutes of Day 3’s play. Pant, however, joined forces with skipper Virat Kohli and the duo steadied the ship.
The pair added 96 runs for the fifth wicket before Kohli fell prey to Lungi Ngidi for 29. Pant then had the responsibility of batting with the tail-enders. Although he didn’t get much support from the other end, he still managed to reach the three-figure mark and took India’s lead over 200 runs.
