Ottis Gibson to coach England post the World Cup 2019?
Faf du Plessis also backs him at the helm.
There are possibilities that the current South African coach Ottis Gibson could move to England after the World Cup 2019. His contract with Cricket South Africa will be terminated after the quadrennial event. There are many questions that are being raised if CSA will extend the deal. But, according to the contract, Gibson can only negotiate over the extension if he manages to win the silverware in the upcoming mega-event.
Since there isn’t any surety regarding the same, Ottis Gibson is pondering over a stint with the English cricket team. The current England coach, Trevor Bayliss reportedly turned down the offer to extend his contract. Hence, the vacant position might be filled by the current South African head coach.
Faf du Plessis backs Ottis Gibson as the head coach
“When Cricket South Africa’s board appointed Ottis, it was with the sole mandate of winning the World Cup. If he achieves the goal, we will look at a possible contract extension,” said CSA CEO Thabang Moroe as quoted by Sport24.
When Gibson was asked about the same question recently, he remained mum. Following the 3-2 ODI series win against Pakistan, he said: “no comments on the comments” when the query was raised. However, he also remarked that “the future is bright.”
Amidst all these talks, South African skipper Faf du Plessis has backed Ottis Gibson to continue as the head coach. He noted that there could be conversations between the coach, the board and the skipper to decide the future. Faf said that the team will love to have Ottis on board if he is keen on coaching. He even said that he enjoyed working with the head coach and pointed out that the team did well under him.
Since Gibson took charge of the Proteas, the team have won 11 of 15 Tests (drawing none), 15 of 25 ODIs and 8 of 11 T20Is. Ottis hasn’t spoken to anyone at the ECB or anywhere else. He doesn’t know where this is coming from,” said CSA as quashing all the reports as quoted by Times Live.
