'Out ho ja bhootni ke' - Yasir Shah yells in frustration after Henry Nicholls misses a cut shot
Yasir Shah bowled 16 wicketless overs on the first day.
The Boxing Day Test match between New Zealand and Pakistan commenced on Saturday with the visitors winning the toss and opting to bowl first. They started well with Shaheen Afridi swinging the new ball upfront and nipping out Tom Latham and Tom Blundell with not much on the board. However, then Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor batted well with their defensive batting frustrating Pakistan bowlers.
Though the latter got out after a well-made 70, Henry Nicholls joined hands with his skipper to make sure New Zealand didn’t give away the advantage. Pakistan had themselves to blame having dropped both the batsmen once each. No wonder Yasir Shah was frustrated as he was not able to provide the breakthrough despite bowling well consistently.
In the 77th over of the innings, the leg-spinner bowled a decent delivery which Nicholls tried to cut and missed. The wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan collected the ball but there was no edge and the batsman survived. Yasir Shah was desperate for a wicket and in frustration, he hilariously ended up yelling, “Out ho jaa bhootni ke.” (which roughly translates to- “Get out man.”)

New Zealand end the day on 222/3
As far as the day’s play is concerned, New Zealand did well after losing a couple of early wickets. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor stitched a 120-run stand for the third wicket. After the latter got out, Nicholls made sure that he didn’t give away his wicket. He was lucky though having dropped once but made the tourists pay for their mistake.
Williamson, at the other end, yet again looked class apart playing some eye-catching strokes. He ended the day unbeaten on 94 as the Kiwis amassed 222 runs for the loss of three in 87 overs. Yasir Shah delivered 16 overs on the day but he couldn’t make much of an impact conceding 56 runs. Pakistan will have to bowl well on the second day to have any chance of winning the Test match and most importantly, hold on to their chances.
