Pakistan’s domestic structure outside the PSL needs improvement, feels Tom Moody

Tom Moody, the former Australian cricketer, feels that the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has helped Pakistan unearth a number of talented cricketers. However, he mentioned that the domestic structure should also be focussed on for the betterment of cricket in the country.

The 54-year-old Moody said that the current Pakistan team doesn’t quite have the firepower lower down the order. As per the veteran, there’s no death of talent in the country, but that can only substantiate if the management finds the flaws in the domestic structure.

“They have to develop the young batsmen outside that franchise model. The domestic structure around the PSL is vital to their acceleration. I am sure Pakistan has recognised that there is a slight dip in the depth of their batting,” Moody was quoted as saying on The Pitch Side Experts Podcast, reported by Cricket Pakistan.

“You have to ask the questions. Is it the surfaces they are playing on or is there a lack of coaching and guidance around the technical side of batsman ship which is missing?  There is got to be a reason because Pakistan have had some really fine batsmen historically,” he stated.

Moody stated that by playing in the PSL, youngsters can gain a whole lot of experience even if they don’t get into the playing eleven. He said that sharing the dressing room with the veteran can do a world of good to the Young Turks.

“A young talented batsman may not be in the starting eleven but sharing the dressing room with the likes of AB de Villiers or Jos Buttler will be a great learning experience. That’s the advantage of these high-profile tournaments,” Moody added.

Back in January-February, Pakistan played in the U19 World Cup. Haider Ali, who played in the mega event, went on to get a PSL contract for the Peshawar Zalmi. He captured the imagination of the fans with his fearless display of stroke-play.

In the team, he also got a chance to rub shoulders with the likes of Kamran Akmal, Wahab Riaz, Liam Livingstone and Shoaib Malik, who all have had plenty of experience in professional cricket.
