The Perth Scorchers have been fined by the Cricket Australia for exceeding the salary cap in the previous edition of the Big Bash League. Iain Roy, the head of integrity for Cricket Australia said that a thorough investigation had been done on the Perth Scorchers and the conclusion has finally been that a penalty has been charged for the same.

A report from Cricket Australia read that the Perth-based franchise had breached the salary cap that had been kept at $ 1.3 Million. The report read that the Scorchers had breached the retainer by $ 50,000. The Scorchers have been fined the minimum penalty of $150,000, with $145,000 suspended pending no further breach of the team retainer pool rules during the next five years.

Iain Roy, CA head of integrity, said the Scorchers self-reported the salary cap breach to CA. “Following a thorough investigation, we understand that this was not a purposeful breaching of the rules by the Perth Scorchers, and this has been taken into account for the purpose of fixing an appropriate penalty,” he said.

Iain Roy went on to state that the Big Bash League took a very proactive stance on the whole matter stating that they would indeed take the necessary action.”We do however take a proactive, zero-tolerance approach to maintaining the integrity of our sport and this includes any breaches of salary caps in the BBL.

“This serves as a timely reminder that the integrity of our game is a high priority and we won’t accept this being compromised,” he added.

The upcoming edition of the Big Bash league will begin on the 20th of December at the Showground Stadium in Sydney where it will be a battle for Sydney in effect. The Sydney Thunder and the Sydney Sixers will take on each other. In spite of their predicament, the Scorchers will play their first match at the WACA on the 23rd against the Adelaide Strikers before the Christmas Break.
