Phil Simmons appointed West Indies head coach again after a shocking exit in 2016

Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) search comes to an end. They were looking for a permanent coach from the last couple of months. In April, they sacked Richard Pybus and appointed former West Indian skipper Floyd Reifer on a temporary basis. But there comes good news as they have roped in their 2016 ICC T20 World Cup-winning coach.

West Indies cricket team is going through a rough patch. They flopped in World Cup 2019 and could only win 1 match in the tournament. After the 50-over mega-event, the Caribbeans played against Team India and ended with zero wins in their pouch.

CWI President happy to bring back their former coach back 

Former cricketer Phill Simmons has been brought back as a coach by the board for the next four years. He coached his national team back in 2016 when he led them to their 2nd T20 World Cup title. Phil has already excelled as a coach in recent years. He was the in-charge when Afghanistan team successfully qualified for 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

And his latest success came when Barbados Tridents won the CPL title under his mentorship. CWI President Ricky Skerritt felt that Simmons is the right man to take a hold over the team. “Bringing Phil Simmons back is not just righting a past wrong, but I am confident that CWI has chosen the right man for the job at the right time. I want to also thank the very talented Floyd Reifer for the hard work he put in while he was the interim coach,” Ricky Skerritt said as quoted by Outlook India.

After the new appointment, CWI’s Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams looked pretty happy about roping Phil Simmons with the team. “I am happy, after a very robust recruitment process at the appointment of Phil to the role of head coach. I have no doubt that Phil brings the requisite leadership skills and experience needed to drive improvement across our international squads and I look forward to supporting him in the role,” he said.

West Indies upcoming assignment is to play a T20I and ODI series against Afghanistan in November. Kieron Pollard will lead them in the limited-overs format while Jason Holder is set to continue as the captain in the Tests.
