Playing white ball cricket before Test series will help Team India in England, believes Ravi Shastri
He also pointed out that the problem of acclimatising to the conditions has been addressed in the new FTP which begins in 2019.
The head coach of India Ravi Shastri is confident of the team doing well in five-match Test series as they will be in the country well in advance. Virat Kohli and his men will play 3 ODIs and as many T20 Internationals before locking horns against the home side in the longest format of the game. The team is being tipped as the best ever to trump England in their own conditions and same was being said during their tour to South Africa. However, Shastri believed that the team playing the shorter formats first will help them.
India’s tour of England will commence on July 3 in the first T20I at the Old Trafford in Manchester and the Test series is set to begin on August 1 in Birmingham. Also even before embarking on the tour, the team is scheduled to play a couple of T20Is against Ireland which will also help them in getting used to the conditions. Moreover, the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ishant Sharma are already playing in the County Cricket and the skipper Virat Kohli will also join them soon.
Confident Shastri
Ravi Shastri, while speaking at a book launch event, felt that they will get more time in England before playing their first Test match. “Michael (Clarke) and I had a chat earlier (today) that we (Indian team) will be there (in England) almost a month before the first Test match. We play some one-day cricket before the first Test match starts. You kick off the one-day games around 1st of July and the first Test starts August 1. That gives us that much more time (to prepare for Tests),” he was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
The head coach also informed the reporters that the problem of acclimatising to the conditions has been addressed in the new FTP which begins in 2019. “To be fair to the BCCI and the CoA, those plans were (already) in place. It’s only when the new FTP kicks in in 2019, that’s when you can address those problems and they have been addressed,” Shastri added.
