The West Bengal police have arrested a 39-year-old man for sending death threats to former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly. The person arrested was identified as Nirmalya Samanta. He was arrested from the Midnapur town on Friday. The reason that has apparently come out for him sending the death threat letter to Ganguly is rather amusing.

Nirmalya did not want the MLA from Garbeta (of Midnapore district) to attend a cricket tournament in the city. Apparently, Ganguly was expected to join the MLA Asish Chakraborty to attend the function on January 19. As per the reports in the Hindustan Times, the accused had some personal differences with the MLA.

He believed that stopping Ganguly from coming to the function would automatically stop the MLA as well. The former Indian skipper was scheduled to be in the town to attend the inter-college cricket competition that was staged by Vidyasagar University. Earlier in the first week on January, Ganguly had found a letter at his residence in Kolkata which was a death threat.

The letter was signed under the name of Z Alam. The threat was addressed to his mother Nirupa. The accused had written, “Your son is hereby warned not to attend the programme. If he dares to come here, you will not see him again.”

He had further asked him not to attend that program that was to be organised by the Vidyasagar University. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president who was supposed to visit Midnapore during the same time had apparently cancelled his trip following the death threat. The police officers have confirmed that they will hand over the case to the police station where the FIR was lodged.

The West Midnapore police super Bharati Ghosh quoted, “We will hand over the case to Behala police station where a complaint was lodged.” The police further added that the accused had already confessed his crime and regrets his actions. Sourav Ganguly is a big name when it comes to cricket in West Bengal. He is the current President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).
