India had sent their second stint team for the tour of Zimbabwe, giving rest to some of their experienced players. The MS Dhoni-led side won the ODI series 3-0, without much of a fight from the opposition. There were quite a few players, who made their first international appearance and had an impressive impact in the series.
Yuzvendra Chahal:
The young leg-spinner made his first international appearance on the back of some great bowling performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016 and was impressive in the series as well. It takes some courage to toss the ball up even after being hit for a boundary, and this 25-year old displayed that more often than not.
With all the variations under the belt, he is quite brilliant while using all of those. With 6 wickets from 3 matches, Chahal was the second leading wicket-taker in the series behind Jasprit Bumrah.
Faiz Fazal:
Faiz Fazal from Mumbai featured only in the 3rd ODI of the series. With India was chasing a small target of 124, Fazal along with his opening partner KL Rahul saw India over the line with all the wickets intact.
The 30-year old grabbed the opportunity with both hands being unbeaten on 55 in the chase. He seemed classy and elegant in the innings, with some beautiful cover drives and straight drives. He was good off the back-foot as well, hitting the winning runs off a short pitched delivery. Fazal becomes the third Indian to score 50 or more on international debut.
KL Rahul:
The player of the series winner – KL Rahul has been in great form throughout the series. He scored 196 runs and remained unbeaten in 2 matches. Runs were flowing from his bat and no Zimbabwe bowler knew a trick to get the better of him. Rahul also became the first Indian to score a hundred on ODI debut. He certainly transformed his good form from the IPL into international cricket.
Karun Nair:
Karun Nair featured in two ODIs in the series. He had scores of 7 and 39 runs in the first two ODIs and was dropped for the 3rd match. There were a lot of comments from the cricket experts in the commentators that, he should have been given more opportunities, taking into consideration of his consistent performances in the Ranji Trophy.
Here we let the fans decide who they think was the most impressive debutant in the ODI series in Zimbabwe.
