Prithvi Shaw leaves for England to fight depression after being banned for eight months
Shaw is currently serving the backdated eight-month suspension.
Prithvi Shaw’s international career got off to a brilliant start with the talented batsman scoring a century against the Windies at home. He was set to be a huge sensation in Australia only for him to get injured in the warm-up game and ruled out of the action. Since then, Shaw is yet to play a game for India and was recently involved in a doping controversy with the BCCI imposing a backdated eight-month suspension on him.
The 19-year-old was found to have consumed the banned substance Terbutaline present in a cough syrup during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. His urine sample was taken for testing during the T20 tournament and Shaw was found positive. He himself took full responsibility of the same and claimed to have taken it unknowingly after suffering with cough and cold in desperation to play the game.
Prithvi Shaw was making a comeback to competitive cricket in that tournament and he didn’t want to miss any game which led to him taking the syrup without consulting the doctor.
Discussion related to doping left Shaw devastated
Prithvi Shaw accepted the suspension imposed by the BCCI and had released a statement regarding the same in which he had urged the other youngsters to be careful while taking any medicine. However, more controversy unfolded regarding the matter later with the BCCI releasing its timeline in Shaw’s doping case.
It has been observed that there was a two-month gap between the sample collection (February 22), and the final report from the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL), May 2, 2019. With a lot being said over the matter, Prithvi Shaw is left devastated and according to a report in the Times of India, he has left for England on the personal expense to stay away from it.
The report also stated that the teenager is suffering from depression and wishes to stay away from all the controversy until his suspension ends. Shaw’s backdated will end in November after which he will eligible to be picked in the Indian team again and it remains to be seen if he will walk back into the side.
