The 19-year-old opening batsman of the Delhi Capitals Prithvi Shaw could’ve become the youngest Indian to score a hundred in any T20 League during Delhi’s electrifying Super Over win against the Kolkata Knight Riders, on Saturday, March 30. Chasing a lofty target of 186 set by the Kolkata side, Delhi was driven towards completing it with ease. Thanks to Prithvi Shaw, the young top-order batsman from India smashed a 55-ball 99, missing out on a hundred.

That unfortunate incident led to Delhi’s deceleration during the chase as the match ended in a tie. Then on the match was carried over to be decided in a Super Over battle. A team having a power-hitter like Andre Russell in their arsenal seemed hard to beat at first. But powered by the frontline South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada, the hosts were able to take the KKR team down.

Rabada fired his signature toe crushers one after another as they defended 10 runs in the Super Over against the visiting Dinesh Karthik-led Kolkata team. Needless to say, the thrilling win triggered wild celebrations at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

Prithvi Shaw is on higher confidence than before, says Gautam Gambhir

Rabada was hailed as the star of the win immediately, however, the real player of the match was the 19-year-old who scored an unfortunate 99. In this light, former India opener Gautam Gambhir expressed that he estimates Shaw’s role in the side should not be altered. “Delhi should thank Kagiso Rabada for some old-fashioned death bowling in the super over. Prithvi Shaw is carrying his high backlift riding on an even higher confidence quotient,” Gambhir, wrote in his column for the TOI.

Next in the schedule for the Delhi Capitals is a showdown with Punjab in Mohali on Monday, April 1. Gambhir, who led Kolkata to two IPL titles, has prompted the Delhi Capitals management to not reconstruct Shaw’s role. “When they take on Kings XI Punjab on Monday, Prithvi’s role should not be altered. Mohali is an even better wicket and it should suit his style of play,” he explained.
