The Indian U19 team, captained by Prithvi Shaw, won the World Cup in New Zealand earlier in February. Several players made their mark, one of them was Abhishek Sharma. He batted lower down the order and provided impetus to the Indian innings on several occasions. The left-handed batsman played some quick-fire knocks and came to the attention of the selectors.
He was duly rewarded as he was blessed with a lucrative deal in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was drafted in by the Delhi Daredevils (DD) for INR 55 Lakhs in the auctions. However, he didn’t get adequate opportunities to show his mettle. The all-rounder made his IPL debut in the second half of the round robin phase and made 63 runs in three matches at a strike-rate of 190.90.
Abhishek’s optimism
After travelling quite a bit of journey in junior level cricket, the cricketer now wants to make it to the higher level. “It is like starting a new journey. I have played most of my cricket at the national and international level at the U-16 and U-19 level, and now the focus will be on making it to the senior teams. Winning the U-19 World Cup was like a dream for all of us,” he said to The Indian Express.
Abhishek plays for Punjab in the domestic level and has had the opportunity to rub shoulders with the likes of Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh. The Young Turk also expressed his gratitude for the stalwarts and also vowed to make a strong statement in the upcoming Ranji season.
I made my debut for Punjab in Ranji Trophy against Himachal Pradesh last year, where I scored 94 runs apart from a fifty in the tournament and senior players like Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh motivated me. I missed out on a century in Ranji Trophy last year but now I will make sure that I start this season strongly and do well for the team,” the young prodigy said.
