Rajeshwari Gayakwad to Karnataka Minister: Don't want a car, family needs a house
The minister lauded her effort for taking the Indian team to the finals with her contribution.
Indian cricketer Rajeshwari Gayakwad was offered a car by the Karnataka government minister for her impressive show in the Women’s World Cup earlier this year in England. But the World Cup finalist politely declined the offer saying that a house for her family would be a more valuable reward.
Water resources minister MB Patil made this announcement on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations. Rajeshwari refused to take up the offer, saying, “Sir, it’s very kind of you for having made the gesture. But I don’t want a car; I want a house for my family, which includes mother, sister and brothers. Shelter is what we badly need now.” The minister said that the government would initiate steps to ensure that the cricketer’s request is fulfilled.
Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa recently backed Rajeshwari by saying that it was a legit request and athletes representing the country should not struggle for the basic needs. He wrote on Twitter, “Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s want is legitimate. International athletes shouldn’t be in want for daily needs,”
The minister handed over the keys of the scooter to the cricketer on behalf of an automobile showroom. Patil lauded her effort for taking the Indian team to the finals with her contribution. The Mithali Raj led Indian team made it to the finals but lost to the hosts England by nine runs. The players also received rewards from their individual state and the central government for the impressive show.

Former cricketers such as Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Anjum Chopra and others appreciated their effort. The Indian captain Virat Kohli too sent a special message ahead of the finals and backed the side for making the long road to the finals. It will be seen in due time if Rajeshwari’s request is accepted by the state government.
