Ranji Trophy 2018-19: Bishan Singh Bedi slams Karnataka players for their rude behaviour with the umpires
Pujara played a match-winning knock to take Saurashtra to the final after he was reprieved by the umpire.
The ongoing Ranji Trophy season has found its finalists. Saurashtra and the defending champions Vidarbha will fight it out in the title clash from February 3 in Nagpur. While Vidarbha’s win was clinical, Saurashtra needed a lot of luck against Karnataka to gun down 279 runs in the fourth innings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Cheteshwar Pujara wasn’t given out twice in two innings and he ran away with the game in the second innings by playing a match-winning knock of 131*.
Pujara was reprieved in the first innings when he was on just 1 after edging the ball off Abhimanyu Mithun’s bowling. But the on-field was unmoved only for the batsman to go on score 45 runs. While this blunder wasn’t enough, the same incident repeated in the second innings when Pujara was on 28 and the same umpire nodded his head in denial, this time the bowler was Vinay Kumar.
The Ranji veteran was quick to vent his frustration towards the umpire and even gestured if he needed spectacles to see the edge.
Bedi bats for DRS
Vinay Kumar was furious for a long time after the incident and was seen having a chat even with the other umpire. But the game had moved on and that surely affected Karnataka’s performance. They couldn’t pick a wicket since then and the fourth wicket partnership of more than 200 runs between Sheldon Jackson and Pujara ran away with the game.
The former Indian cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi, however, had a different view to the controversy. While the Karnataka fans booed the umpire for giving the wrong decision and Pujara for not walking after edging, Bedi felt that the DRS should be employed in such important matches of the tournament. Moreover, he also slammed Karnataka players’ behaviour towards the umpire after the incident.
Bedi backed the umpires as humans and even went on to say that they are entitled to make mistakes. “Maybe room fr DRS in domestic Crkt also…but Karnataka fielders’ behaviour could have been better considering Umpires are as human as the players..!!” his tweet read.
