41-time Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai kick-started the 6th round with a dominant performance against Baroda on day 1. Shreyas Iyer and skipper Siddesh Lad smashed big hundreds as Mumbai managed to register 439 runs on the board at stumps on Day 1. It was left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt chipped with four wickets for Baroda.
Despite a brilliant bowling effort from Karnataka, Priyank Panchal ensured Gujarat posted a respectable total on Day 1. Panchal registered a 135-ball 74 which propelled a struggling Gujarat side to 216 runs in their first innings. Karnataka lost two wickets at stumps having scored 45 runs.
Ponnam Rahul and V Manoharan registered fifties for Kerala which helped them finish Day 1 on an authoritative note against Delhi. The previous edition’s runners-up looked pale on the field and apart from Shivam Sharma’s 4-fer, there was no real character shown by the Delhi bowlers.
Vijay Shankar aids Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu and Punjab locked horns at Mohali and as expected, the game turned out to be very competitive. Despite getting off to a poor start, Vijay Shankar’s fifty saved the sinking ship for the south Indian side. Tamil Nadu ended day 1 at 213/9 with Shankar scoring 71 off 122 runs.
Youngster Ishan Kishan mustered a quickfire fifty for Jharkhand alongside Shahbaz Nadeem and Ishank Jaggi, which saw them take the pole position against Uttar Pradesh. They finished the first day at 278/6 in 86 overs and will be eyeing to get over the 350-run mark on day 2.
