Ranji Trophy 2018-19: Shreyas Iyer included in Mumbai squad for Baroda match
Iyer is currently in New Zealand with the India 'A' team.
Mumbai haven’t had the best of campaigns in the ongoing edition of the Ranji Trophy. They are competing in the Elite Group A and are languishing in the eighth position out of nine teams. Mumbai have thus far garnered five points from four matches. Even as they have lost one match against Gujarat by nine wickets, they have been able to draw three matches.
Their next match is against Baroda that is scheduled to get underway on Friday, December 14 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In the meantime, Mumbai have decided to make quite a few changes in a bid to turn to their wretched fortunes around in the first-class tournament. They have roped in 24-year-old Shreyas Iyer for the next encounter.
Quite a few changes
They were led by experienced fast bowler Dhawal Kulkarni in the first three matches against Railways, Karnataka and Gujarat respectively. But he didn’t play the last match and Siddhesh Lad took over the leadership mantle. Meanwhile, Iyer is currently with the India ‘A’ team in New Zealand for the unofficial Test and One Day series as per reports in Mid Day.
The youngster is expected to return before the match against Baroda. Lad remains to be the captain. The team has also decided to drop former captain Suryakumar Yadav and Arman Jaffer, the niece of Wasim Jaffer, who is currently plying his trade for Vidarbha, last year’s champion. Yadav was inconsistent with the bat having scored 230 runs at an average of 32.85.
Jaffer, on the contrary, played only a couple of games in which he could only manage 11 runs at a forgettable average of 2.75. Mumbai are the most successful team in the history of the Ranji Trophy, but they haven’t quite lived up to expectations in the last few seasons. The team would be hoping to get back to winning ways and restamp their authority in the tournament.
