Right after the 2015 World Cup debacle, the ECB had given a strong green signal to its white-ball players to extensively go and play the IPL. Perhaps this move in many ways had also then allowed Jos Buttler to completely transform his T20 game. The leeway also then immediately allowed Buttler to easily fetch an IPL franchise, as the MI team in IPL 2016 had signed the wicket-keeper batsman for an amount of INR 3.8 Crore.

However, with Buttler fairly having a reasonable show in his two-year stint with the MI team, the cricketer was then released before the 2018 mega auction. While a  lot of MI fans had expected the MI management to recast him by using the RTM card, the franchise barely showed any interest at the auction table.

Hence, with the RR team finally signing Buttler for INR 4.5 Crore in IPL 2018, the explosive batter became worth for every penny, as from his 13 games Buttler had scored a total of 548 runs at a towering average of 54.80. On the other hand, the MI team in that season did endure a struggle with their overall batting that also eventually had displeased fans regarding Buttler’s omission. Hence, Buttler’s exclusion from the MI team turned to be a fortune-changing affair for the RR team especially in the 2018 season when they had qualified for the playoffs.
