Rare breed of Indian batsmen who have succeeded in England
These five batsmen always kept India on top in England.
3. Dilip Vengsarkar:
If Sunil Gavaskar managed to survive in the tricky conditions, it was Dilip Vengsarkar who set up some historical wins for India in England. The Mumbaikar made the Lord’s his den scoring three centuries, the only visiting player to score as many Test tons at this venue. Vengsarkar scored 508 runs in four Lord’s Tests at an average of 72.57. Overall, he amassed a whopping 960 runs across four tours to England with four centuries and as many fifties in the longer format.
The top-order batsman smashed 103 and 157 at the home of cricket in 1979 and 1982 tours. He registered his 3rd score of more than 100 at the venue in 1986 with an unbeaten 126. India recorded their first ever Test win at the Lord’s in that game which they won by five wickets. Vengsarkar also remained not-out on 102 in the next match at the Leeds as his team sealed the 3-match Test series with one game still to be played.
