Ravi Ashwin tweets a picture with Virat Kohli, clearing the rumours of rift
Ashwin didn't play the opening Test in Antigua.
There have been constant talks of a rift between Indian skipper Virat Kohli and off-spinner Ravi Ashwin. The tweaker is arguably one of the team’s most reliable bowlers in Test cricket, but in the last year or so, he has had to warm the benches on quite a few instances. Recently, Ashwin also missed out the opening Test versus the Windies at the North Sound in Antigua.
The omission raised quite a few eyebrows and it was speculated that everything is not good between the experienced campaigners. Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian cricketer, was astonished by the move and stated that he shouldn’t have been benched bearing in mind his numbers.
Ashwin has all of his four Test centuries against the Caribbean team to go with an average of 50 and Gavaskar clearly wasn’t happy. In the meantime, the talks of Virat and Ashwin’s souring relationship have been doing the rounds for quite a while. In the last edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Ashwin was caught by Kohli after which the former smashed his gloves in anger.
Later, Ashwin tried to explain the matter in the post-match press conference, which suggested that there’s something fishy. “I just played with passion, so does he (Virat). That’s it. As simple as that,” he said. Ashwin and Kohli are skippers of their respective IPL teams.
Nick Compton also has his doubts
As far as the recent omission is considered, Nick Compton, the cricketer turned commentator, opined on the issue. He believed that there’s a personal difference between Virat and Ashwin. “What is going on with Ashwin… clearly a personal difference between him and Kohli?” he tweeted.
However, a development has come to the fore, which suggests that there’s nothing wrong between the two cricketers. Ashwin posted a picture where he and Virat are having fun in the middle of a river. The picture also has Anushka Sharma, Virat’s wife, KL Rahul, and Mayank Agarwal.
He captioned the picture and wrote, “Seaside plus sunset is a deadly combination.” Now it remains to be seen if Ashwin finds a place in the eleven for the second Test in Jamaica or not.
