The 2018 FIFA World Cup is currently being played in Russia and there hasn’t been any dearth of oomph and excitement surrounding the extravaganza. Spain and Portugal locked horns on the second day of the event and churned out an absolute nail-biter. Both teams kept the audience guessing and telecast some exhilarating piece of football.
However, the match ended in a draw on 3-3. Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score a hat-trick versus their opponents in the tournament. He started with a penalty in the fourth minute of the match, which immediately exerted pressure on the Spaniards. Diego Costa, Spain’s striker, got his team back into the hunt with a stupendous goal in the 24th minute.
Ronaldo’s calmness seals the deal
Just before the end of the first-half, Ronaldo took Portugal into the lead. David de Gea, the goalkeeper, committed a blunder. He couldn’t collect the ball properly and it ricocheted off his legs into the goal. Yet another time Costa brought his team back with a goal in the 55th minute. Nacho’s goal way away from the goalpost in the 58th minute helped Spain into the ascendancy.
They held on to their nerves and went to the threshold of their first win the event until Ronaldo dashed their hopes. The veteran pulled a rabbit out the hat and nailed a free-kick in the 88th minute, which traced into the box. Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin, the Indian off-break bowler, who recently played the historic Test between India and Afghanistan in Bangalore, is following the World Cup closely.
He had a wonderful match as he finished with five wickets in the Test. Ashwin took to Twitter and rooted for Spain while hailing them as the most formidable teams. He wrote- “This is exhilarating stuff from Spain, easily the best team to watch when on song. #FIFAWC2018 #ESPvsPOR”
Here is Ashwin’s post
