Reports: IPL auction for the 2020 season set to take place in December
The salary cap for the franchises is also expected to increase.
Although the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season is almost seven months away, the concerned authorities have started the preparations for the same. The franchises have already begun trading the players and have also tweaked their support staff in order to come out on top next year. The tournament is expected to start in April next year and the auction for the same looks set to take place in December.
The 2019 edition of the cash-rich league was considerably preponed with the World Cup in England to follow. But this time there would be no such issue and with the T20 World Cup to follow in October, the IPL performances will definitely come into consideration when it comes to team selection.
The IPL officials are planning to hold the auction early according to the reports in Mumbai Mirror and the date is expected to be finalised soon. It will also be interesting to see if the teams release some of their underperforming players who disappointed in the previous season and the cut-off date for the same should be announced sooner rather than later.
Salary cap expected to increase
The report also read that the IPL authorities are considering the option to increase the salary cap for the teams in this mini-auction. It has been learnt that each of the franchise will get Rs 3 crore increment in the salary cap but nothing has been confirmed officially yet.
Meanwhile, the franchises have been overhauling their support staffs with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to be the latest to do so. They have appointed Mike Hesson as the team director while Simon Katich will take over as the head coach from Gary Kirsten for the upcoming season. The Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) is also looking for options in that aspect and expect them to make an announcement soon.
