Reports: Sourav Ganguly not pleased with CoA changing rules in domestic cricket

The Committee of Administrators (CoA), appointed by the Supreme Court, has once again faced criticism for its frequent changes in domestic cricket. The latest issue that has led to displeasure amongst authorities is about the eligibility criteria to play domestic cricket for a particular state. The one-year rule forwards and government employees to qualify as local players upon their transfer to a different state has been relaxed, which has led to BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary expressing his disappointment and disapproval.

Now, as per reports, Sourav Ganguly himself has come out against this trend of relaxation of rules, adding that he is left wondering how these decisions were being made without any consultation. Ganguly currently heads the BCCI’s technical committee and is also the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal.

As per a report in the Times of India, the former India captain had written to Mr Choudhary regarding the ongoing issue, emphasizing on the fact that the manner in which these decisions are being made is against the basic constitution of the BCCI.

“Dear Amitabh ji, I am totally agreeable to this and have brought to the notice of the concerned people. I am really surprised it goes through without consultation. Even the decisions taken at the technical committee meeting have been overlooked and new rules have been followed. It is complete chaos and against the basic constitution of the BCCI where the respective committees are holding meetings. Hopefully, the CoA will understand the importance,” Ganguly wrote in the email.

In 2017, the Supreme Court nominated Vinod Rai, Ramachandra Guha, Vikaram Limaye and Diana Edulji as part of the CoA to look after the administration of the BCCI and implement Lodha committee reforms. The CoA had earlier tweaked the one-year rule of working/studying for a player to qualify as a player of the state, the team in question being Puducherry. However, after facing criticism from other state associations, the CoA was forced to retract its decision and in turn roll back the change.
