India suffered another major blow in their pursuit of England’s 259 as they lost Virat Kohli early in the innings. India had already lost both their openers cheaply inside the powerplay, and the former Indian skipper’s horrendous lean run with the bat also continued as he followed suit after his brief innings was ended by England’s Reece Topley.
The visitors were rocked early in their chase in the series finale in Manchester as they lost Shikhar Dhawan on the first delivery of the third over, his second failure in this series. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma soon joined his opening partner in the dressing room after poking at a delivery in the fifth over.
Kohli, who was looking in fine touch, like in his previous outings, once again nicked a delivery angled away from his body. This is the first instance of Kohli going through five consecutive innings in ODIs without getting to the 20-run mark. Topley has been the tormentor-in-chief by picking up all three Indian wickets so far, following his six-for in the previous encounter, his bowling figures of 6/24 being the best figures by an English bowler in ODI cricket.
Meanwhile, India’s hopes of winning the series now lie on the young shoulders of Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya as the three-match ODI series is currently level 1-1. England, on the other hand, will like to replicate the same performance from the second ODI, where they dismantled the Indian batters for just 146 runs.
Jos Buttler bailed England out with a captain’s knock in the first innings
Earlier in the innings, England’s top order once again faltered as Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root’s torrid run in the ODI series continued. Ben Stokes and Jason Roy consolidated after those early two wickets but were dismissed in quick succession as England were in trouble at 74/4 with three-quarters of the overs still remaining.
The newly appointed white-ball skipper Jos Buttler rose to the occasion with a well-made 60, stitching valuable partnerships with the lower middle order batters. A 48-run stand between all-rounders David Willey and Craig Overton ensured that England finished with a decent total of 259 runs on the board.
