Ricky Ponting eager to embrace Australia’s T20 coaching job
He is assisting Darren Lehmann in coaching in the ongoing tri-series.
Ricky Ponting was one of Australia’s greatest batsmen to have played the game. The cricketer has thrived under diverse conditions and subsequently, grew in stature, both as a cricketer and as the leader of the Kangaroos. Australia is currently playing a tri-nation T20 International alongside New Zealand and England and Ponting is assisting Darren Lehmann in coaching.
However, Australia has expressed their desire to employ separate coaches for the three different formats with every passing series. Ricky Ponting has mostly been involved in the T20 format ever since his retirement and he has shown his keenness to mentor the T20 team in the long run. The former cricketer talked about his ambitions after his induction to the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame.
Ponting expresses his ambition
“I know Cricket Australia are looking down that path … I’ve been talking to CA for a little while about succession planning with coaching in the shorter forms of the game. I’m on record saying I’m interested in doing the Twenty20 job for Australia if it came up and I can make it fit in and work. There’s a few things I just want to get ticked off from CA first as far as how my thoughts are on how we can become a better, more explosive, consistent team” Ponting was quoted as saying to ESPNCricinfo.
He also highlighted the challenges of a coach and appreciated the cricket board for taking care of their support staff. “It’ll be interesting to see how coaching does go, it’s hard work on the players as we know, and CA have done a great job making sure Darren’s had a series off here and there just to keep him fresh,” he iterated. Australia has won their first three games of the tri-series and have already qualified for the final of the tournament.
