Rishabh Pant voices out the valuable lessons he learnt from Dhoni and Kohli
The young wicketkeeper-batsman credits veteran MS Dhoni and skipper Virat Kohli for the improvement in his game.
Rishabh Pant is perhaps the best player that India would miss in their ranks when the ICC World Cup arrives. The 21-year-old Delhi wicketkeeper-batsman missed the opportunity to make his maiden WC squad narrowly, losing the last leg to the more experienced Dinesh Karthik. Pant had his chance to cement the opportunity when he was preferred ahead of Karthik in India’s last home series against Australia. But he messed things up with shoddy wicket-keeping and losing what looked a certain case for him.
Pant, who is currently playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Delhi Capitals and has a fairly decent tournament, hasn’t hidden the fact that he was disappointed on missing out. Especially after the meteoric rise he had witnessed in Test cricket in which he slammed two hundreds overseas, it was being believed that Pant is the next big thing in Indian cricket after MS Dhoni.
“I was disappointed, obviously. Every player playing for the country dreams of participating in the World Cup. It would have been an entirely different experience. I was disappointed but as a cricketer or a professional, I know that there is nothing I will achieve if I continue to think about it. I try to move on and focus on the matches that I am playing,” Pant was quoted as saying by AajTak in an exclusive interview. It was his first since the exclusion from the WC squad.
Pant’s exclusion had left a lot of former cricketers surprised as they were confident that the youngster was a certainty for WC 2019 till the selectors decided otherwise.
The young cricketer is still in his formative years and he keeps trying to improve his game. He admits that it is a challenging task but credits Dhoni and India captain Virat Kohli for his learning through the way.
Playing 100 games not necessary to become an experienced player
“I have learnt a lot from both MS Dhoni and Virat. The main thing I would say is discipline. Even till date, Mahi bhai is not late. He follows the same process every day. An international player believes in his process, the things that suit him well. One thing which Virat bhaiya told me and I will never forget is that playing 100 games is not necessary to become an experienced player. Learning from other player’s mistake and not repeating it is equally important. You can get that even from 10 games and there is no need to play 100 games,” Pant said while explaining the valuable lessons he learnt from two of India’s contemporary cricketing superstars.
