Robin Uthappa has the ability and credit to MS Dhoni for persisting with him: Gautam Gambhir

Robin Uthappa played a scintillating innings for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with the willow in the first Qualifier against the Delhi Capitals (DC). The right-handed batsman scored a quickfire 63 off just 44 deliveries and helped the MS Dhoni-led side beat the opposition with 4 wickets to spare.

And now, Gautam Gambhir has opened up on Uthappa’s innings against the Delhi Capitals side. The former Indian cricketer feels that credit has to be given to MS Dhoni for sending Robin Uthappa in at the No.3 spot in the batting lineup.

Adding that Dhoni might have very easily been tempted to go with Suresh Raina in the playing XI, the 39-year-old opined that when a captain persists with a player who has the ability like Robin Uthappa, he will come good.

“You have to give credit to MS Dhoni that he continued with Robin Uthappa. He could have easily been tempted to go for Suresh Raina. When you persist with a player, he will eventually come good if he has the ability, and Robin has the ability,” said Gambhir in a chat on Cricinfo.

Robin Uthappa likes batting inside the Top three: Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir further added that Robin Uthappa likes to bat inside the Top 3, and has proven his ability in the past as well. Adding that recognizing this was important, Gambhir concluded by stating that MS Dhoni and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) got the reward for sending in Uthappa at the No.3 slot.

“He (Robin) has shown it in the past. And, probably he likes batting at the Top 3, and before this, he actually has not batted at No.3, he has batted at No.4, so probably this is where he likes it, and recognizing and sending him at No.3 was equally important. MS has used Moeen Ali at No.3, and today he used Robin Uthappa, and he has got the fruits,” concluded Gautam Gambhir.

With their victory over the Delhi Capitals, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have now qualified for the summit clash of IPL 2021, which will be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on 15th October 2021.
