Rohit Sharma is the best man who can take India to an ICC trophy: Sunil Gavaskar
Shastri and Kohli have already hinted at Rohit Sharma as the new T20I skipper of India.
Virat Kohli’s captaincy stint in T20Is came to an end after India’s last league game in the T20 WC 2021. Though India couldn’t qualify for the semi-finals round, Kohli bows out as captain with some exceptional records. Though the final name hasn’t been announced by the BCCI, it is most likely that ace batter Rohit Sharma will take up India’s charge in the shortest format of the game.
Talking in the same context, former Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar stated that they don’t have to think for the long term now as the next T20 WC is not even 12 months away. In this case, Sharma stands to be the best man who can take India to an ICC Trophy. Kohli and departing head coach Ravi Shastri have already hinted that Rohit is ready to take up the mantle.
“Long term would have been the case if the World Cup was maybe 2-3 years away. But the next World Cup is less than 12 months away so you don’t need to look long-term there. Maybe for the long-term, you can look at 2023, but right now you have got to look for the best man who can take India to an ICC trophy and that is Rohit Sharma,” said Gavaskar while speaking to Sports Today.
With his record for MI, Rohit Sharma is the obvious choice, says Sunil Gavaskar
It is known to all that Mumbai batter has some exceptional records in T20 captaincy as he has led his IPL franchise Mumbai Indians to record five titles so far. However, Gavaskar also stated that after the next edition of the T20 WC in Australia is done, India maybe can look for other options for the shortest format but for now, they don’t have to think for the long term.
“With his record for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, he is the obvious choice, so I think he should be given the captaincy and maybe after the next year’s World Cup in Australia is done, maybe have a look at another T20 captain. But right now, it is only Rohit Sharma,” he added.
