The T20 format which began in 2003 and was conceptualized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), has gained so much popularity in the last few years that it has become the go-to option for every country which wants to start their own franchise-based league. India was quick to pounce on the popularity with the IPL and Chris Gayle of West Indies was the first true superstar of this format.
He is also one of the pioneers of the format, setting the blueprint for how power hitters should go about doing their jobs in the 20 overs available for them. Gayle, therefore, has over 12,000 runs in the T20 format with 22 hundreds to his name with the highest score of 175*. However, India’s Rohit Sharma has taken a different route to Gayle and other powerful batsmen, as he prefers to take his time and set himself to bat through the innings and his T20 record is an envious one.
Rohit has a good strike rate, timing, and plays cricketing shots: Brad Hogg
Chris Gayle’s record score of 175* came in an IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Pune Warriors India. Apart from him, Australia’s Aaron Finch is the only other batsman to score over 150 runs in one T20I inning, twice. He has scores of 156 against England and 172 against Zimbabwe. Yet no batsmen have come any closer to making a double hundred in the format.
Therefore, when a fan on Twitter asked former Australia spinner Brad Hogg, who he thinks will hit a double century first in T20 format; the jovial cricketer surprised with his choice of the batsman. Hogg named India and Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma as his choice to make a double hundred in T20s. He mentioned that he thought Rohit had a very good strike rate, brilliant timing and has the range of shots to take advantage of all-round the ground.
“Rohit Sharma at presently is the only player I think capable of it. Good strike rate, all timing, and plays cricketing shots finding six options all around the ground, “Hogg tweeted.
