Rohit Sharma provides much-needed update on his injury

India opening batter Rohit Sharma did not take the field on the fifth day of The Oval Test against England as he had picked up an injury while batting in the second innings of the Test. He had some issues with his left knee and was seen in discomfort during the latter stages of the innings. Apart from Rohit, Cheteshwar Puajra had some problems as he had sprained his ankle while taking a single.

The severity of the duo’s injuries is still not known and their participation in the fifth Test, which is scheduled to begin on Friday (10 September) in Manchester also remains to be seen. After a brief stoppage of play, Pujara was up and running after being taped in the ankle. He seemed to be doing fine, and by the look of it, his injury didn’t look too serious. India’s number three batter didn’t take the field during the whole of England’s run-chase in the fourth innings due to precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, Rohit provided an update on his injury, and there is a remarkable improvement seen in his left knee. “It looks good at the moment. The message from the physio is ‘assess every minute, don’t look too far ahead’,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Sharma’s classy knock of 127 runs paved the way for India to win the fourth Test at The Oval by a huge margin of 157 runs. He laid the foundation for the team posting a total above 400. He was also supported by Pujara, Rishabh Pant, and Shardul Thakur, who chipped in with useful fifties. With this win, India took a 2-1 lead with a game yet to be played.

Sharma said that a break in between the World Test Championship (WTC) Final and the start of the England Test series was an absolute deal-breaker as it helped the team to prepare well for the five Test matches.

“It’s always important to embrace the challenge it’s not going to be easy. Back in Durham we had time off to look at our training and technique, and after the World Test Championship final we had 20-25 days, that was a real game-changer,” added Rohit.
