Rohit Sharma told he will be using me as Jasprit Bumrah in Nagpur: Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar is the taste of the nation after his match-winning spell in the third and deciding T20I match against Bangladesh at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur on November 10. His record-breaking bowling effort helped India win the match and the series 2-1 despite coming into the match 1-1 and at one stage, it looked like the visitors will romp home in the chase.

Chahar led the Indian bowling attack in absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar and was not aided by an underperforming Khaleel Ahmed at the other end. But stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma used him wisely in important phases of the match and he delivered with a superlative performance, earning him the Man of the Match and Player of the Series awards.

Talking about his record-breaking 6/7, which are now the best bowling figures in T20I history, bettering Ajantha Mendis’ effort of 6/8 against Zimbabwe in 2012, Deepak Chahar was quoted as saying by India Today, “He (Rohit Sharma) told me I will use you as a Bumrah today. I will bowl you in the crucial overs and that was motivating for me.

“I love it when I am given responsibility under pressure because that makes me feel that I am being trusted. I feel bad when nobody trusts me. To get that confidence from the captain felt good at that stage of the game.”

Deepak Chahar had picked three wickets at the start of the innings, and then came back in the death overs to complete a well-deserved hat-trick. He picked the wickets of Shafiul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman and Aminul Islam to end the match and pocket the trophy for Men in Blue. Chahar though has his feet grounded after delivering a record-breaking spell and conceded that Jasprit Bumrah is a much better bowler than him.

“Imandar hona chahiye (You should be honest) I know where he stands and I also know where I stand. He is the No.1 bowler in the format and as a T20 bowler, he has everything, be it pace or control. He is the No.1 bowler for me and saying that it is not a shame. I am not competing with him and my job is to do well. You need to focus on the game and the team should win and that has to be the priority,” Chahar was quoted as saying when compared to Bumrah.

Earlier, half-centuries by Shreyas Iyer (62) and KL Rahul (52) enabled India to reach 174/5 in 20 overs, while Shaiful Islam and Soumya Sarkar picked two wickets each. In reply, Mohammad Naim hit a magnificent 81 in 48 balls with 10 fours and 2 sixes, but Shivam Dube picked three wickets in quick succession to bring India back in the game.
