The player retentions for the upcoming edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) was announced by the franchises on January 4 in Bengaluru ahead of the main auction. While the event went on the expected lines with the Indian superstars being retained by their respective franchises, there were also a couple of surprises thrown during the event. However, the selfless gesture made by Rohit Sharma towards his franchise during the retention talks with them in winning the internet currently.

Rohit was retained by Muma Indians which was expected and was also paid Rs. 15 Crore according to the rules set by the Governing Council of the tournament. The likes of Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah were also retained given their stature in the international cricket right now. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli became the most expensive cricketer as he was paid Rs. 17 Crore by Royal Challengers Bangalore while retaining him as the first player. The price tag was still a modest one as he would’ve earned more in case he was at the players’ auction.

Rohit’s lovely gesture

Rohit Sharma is one of the hottest cricketers currently going around thanks to his exploits at the international level. Recently, against Sri Lanka, he became the first ever player to score three double-centuries in ODIs and also slammed the joint fastest century in the T20Is. He had a great chance to earn as much as Kohli did but decided to take a ‘paycut’ in the interest of playing for Mumbai Indians according to the reports in Times of India.

“Rohit is a leader not just on field but off it too. We have seen him dropping to No 3 or lower down the batting order at times only to bring balance to the side. And now, his selfless gesture only goes on to proves that he keeps the team’s priority over self,” said a source close to the TOI. This gesture from Rohit towards his MI is surely going to win the hearts of his fans.

The Hitman has won the coveted IPL title thrice since 2013 since taking over the mantle of the side from the legendary Ricky Ponting. He has done wonders to their fortunes and would love to win more titles for them in the upcoming seasons as well.
